Rotary & Rotarians

"If there is any one of the many things in Rotary that seems to me to be appropriate at this moment, it is the promotion of international goodwill...

It is quite natural that we should think of our nations as THE nations...and thinks that the culture and educational processes of the other countries are essentially wrong if they differ from our own...

If we cannot encourage that feeling of tolerance in our own country and in every country, only God can save the world".

Paul Harris speaking to the Rotary Club of Elgin, Scotland,
June 2, 1934 as reported in the local press.

This is correct even today.
Rotary is basically fun with fellowship in D1180. Everybody is equal in the rotary meeting. Normally all meetings are lunch or dinner meets. Lunch meetings strongly believe in time usually starts by 12.30 & finishes by 2pm. Evening meetings enjoy more leisure; members gather around 6.30 p.m. & dinner usually lasts for 2 hours, but they do say grace before eating. For example, "For what we are about to receive, may the Lord make us truly thankful and forever mindful of others less fortunate than ourselves. Amen." It was humble and reverent moment, and worthy of respect. After that they raise a toast for their Queen.

Than comes the turn of speaker or business. Before adjourning the meeting they always raise toast to Rotary & peace world over.
Clubs organize charity walks to raise money, which they donate for their local purpose or international projects.

I found a few things interesting:

There is no committee of Past District Governors or council, which decides the norms of Rotary in the district. Every member get a chance to vote and be a part of the decision making process.

Even for selection of District Governor, there is no nomination committee. All clubs according to their membership strength get the right to vote & normally it is done in the District Conference.

Every one pays for the registrations of District Events irrespective of the post in Rotary

An alternate team leader of GSE goes as a Team Leader in the next year.

All the Rotarians after our presentations told that they see India as one of the fastest developing nations. Many of them now want to visit India to the places, which they have never heard before. They were amazed to see the reforms in Industries in India.

The amount of work our Rotarians are doing for community development was very much appreciated & many clubs have shown interest in doing projects with our district. They all were amazed to see Rotarians building dams, International Dolls Museum & rehabilitation work after earthquake.

One of the things that pleased me most during the GSE was hearing UK Rotarians say how much they appreciated seeing a Young Team leader of 38 Years. It does make me think that Rotary districts should recruit younger GSE team leaders.

DG. Colin James brought the centennial Bell of Rotary for us in the meeting of RC Neston; it was a thrilling experience to ring the centennial bell, which has traveled to first 100 Rotary Clubs. Thank You DG. Colin.
